What You'll Do

As the Communications Specialist you’ll play a key role in amplifying CANZA’s voice across Canada through strategic storytelling, digital engagement, and creative execution. The Specialist leads CANZA’s social media, digital, and creative activities, developing engaging content, driving innovation, and strengthening the organization's reputation among partners, funders, and the public. 

With exceptional creative, writing, and strategic skills, the Specialist brings ideas to life across multiple platforms while ensuring alignment with CANZA’s brand and mission. We are seeking a proactive collaborator who thrives in a fast-paced environment, building positive relationships across teams to deliver timely, high-quality communications that inform, inspire, and connect.

The ideal candidate is passionate about storytelling, sustainability, and the power of communications to mobilize collective action toward a more regenerative future for Canadian agriculture. The Specialist reports to the Head of Communications and Public Affairs at CANZA. You will take on the following responsibilities: 


      Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Create and deliver compelling content for a variety of communication channels, using creative storytelling to increase engagement with internal and external audiences.
  • Develop and manage a multi-channel content calendar to tell CANZA’s story; showcasing its people, partners, strategic initiatives, achievements, and innovations to internal and external audiences.
  • Create and adapt storytelling materials such as case studies, impact stories, and campaign features.
  • Provide creative services, including photography, video and graphic design. Work with different teams to coordinate requests; liaise with third parties and vendors as required.


      External Relations & Media Engagement

  • Support public relations through brainstorming sessions, drafting media releases, generating stories, and managing media inquiries.
  • Monitor and report on media coverage and online engagement, using insights to enhance reach and impact.
  • Assist in communications and briefs preparation for partners, funders, and collaborators.
  • Manage general inquiries through CANZA’s public channels (e.g., shared inbox).


      Social Media & Digital Communications

  • Develop and implement social media strategies and campaigns that align with CANZA’s goals.
  • Manage CANZA’s digital and social media channels, ensuring content is engaging and up-to-date, complying with brand guidelines, AODA standards and best practices. 
  • Coordinate incoming requests, prioritizes need, and develop publishing schedules.
  • Monitor performance metrics (e.g., engagement, reach) and provide summary reports to inform strategy.
  • Develop visual assets (graphics, photography, short video clips) to enhance online storytelling and presentations.
  • Maintain and support an organized library of visual content for easy access and reuse.


      Event & Campaign Support

  • Support planning, logistics, and communications for partner events, webinars, and launches.
  • Coordinate event materials, registration, agendas, and provide on-site or online support.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and delivery.


      Team & Project Coordination

  • Provide general coordination and support to the Head of Communications and PA on priority projects.
  • Collaborate across GenCan teams to align messaging and achieve shared goals.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to achieve CANZA’s goals and objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • 5 - 7 years experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or marketing.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Skilled in digital writing, editing, and visual design, with a knack for making complex ideas accessible and compelling.
  • Advanced digital and social media content creation expertise, with up-to-date knowledge of compliance standards and best practices across major platforms: including Facebook, Threads, X (Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, and YouTube.
  • Experience navigating complex environments with diverse goals, challenges, and stakeholders.
  • Decisive leader with sharp problem-solving and risk assessment skills.
  • Up-to-date on communications trends, technologies, and best practices, with a drive for continuous learning.
  • Proficiency with content management and measurement tools like Hootsuite.
  • Experience with web content management systems and creative tools like Canva.
  • Strong visual communication skills in graphic design, photography, or video editing.
  • Experience in event coordination or project logistics is an asset.
