Description

Communications staff develop and implement internal and external communications efforts on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) by spearheading promotional and marketing efforts for several key divisions of the office, including Unclaimed Property, Consumer Protection and Medicaid Fraud, and by working with appropriate division staff to compile and develop informational pieces and reports for internal and external use.

The Public Relations Assistant manages and coordinates media and public relation activities for the Office of the Indiana Attorney General.


Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Develops and implements media, communications, and public relations strategies for the Office;
  • Coordinates the Communication team requirements, obligations, and commitments to ensure proper coverage. 
  • Remains abreast of current legislative and non-legislative issues about which the Attorney General may be questioned;
  • Evaluates current events and media reports locally and nationally for their impact on the Office;
  • Develops press releases, media advisories, op-eds, statements, internal and external newsletters, and other communications materials for the Attorney General;
  • Assists with coordinating any other communications initiatives aimed at effectively describing and promoting the Office of the Attorney General and its various divisions and programs
  • Maintains a good working relationship with the Attorney General, staff, media, and constituents;
  • Works well under pressure and handles stress;
  • Accepts performance-based criticism and direction; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Typical Skills and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations or a closely related field preferred, but not required, including strong academic credentials
  • 3-5 years of related experience is preferred but not required. 
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Understanding of print, broadcast, and online media
  • Knowledge of current issues and events in which the Attorney General is involved
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the representation of the Attorney General’s position on policy issues
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others
  • Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner
  • Knowledge of office computer applications
  • Proficiency in word processing
