Role Specification:

We’re seeking a proactive, results-driven PR Manager to own and execute our public relations strategy in the UK and US markets. In this role, you’ll work closely with the Head of Marketing, CEO, and multifunctional teams—including product, clinical, and R&D, to shape how Open Bionics is perceived by media, healthcare professionals, potential partners, and the broader public. You'll be confident pitching to journalists having already nurtured relationships in the media, crafting press materials, and measuring the impact of every campaign. Prosthetic and Orthotic industry experience is a bonus, but we’re primarily looking for someone with a successful track record in the tech, healthcare, or consumer-tech press.

You should be able to:

  • Identify and leverage news hooks (e.g., product launches, partnership announcements, user success stories) to secure press coverage in both print and broadcast. 

  • Build and maintain relationships with key journalists and influencers in both mainstream and niche publications (including tech, health, and lifestyle titles).

  • Write compelling press releases, bylined articles, and case studies that showcase our Hero Arm users and tech innovations.

  • Monitor media coverage, track KPIs, and refine your approach based on what’s working.

  • Coordinate with any international PR freelancers (e.g., for France, Germany) and agencies where required, ensuring brand consistency and alignment.

  • Encourage cross-team collaboration, working with product, and clinical teams to surface compelling story angles.

  • Proactively collect stories, build relationships with users, and create packages that work across print, broadcast, and digital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive PR strategy for the UK and US, aligned with overall marketing and business objectives.

  • Identify relevant news opportunities and craft proactive story pitches (e.g., product milestones, user stories, research findings) to target tech, health, and lifestyle press.

  • Write, edit, and distribute press releases, media kits, and other PR collateral.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, bloggers, and influencers—both generalist and specialized (tech, healthcare, mobility).

  • Serve as the primary media contact for interview requests, product demos, and press briefings.

  • Manage media monitoring tools to track coverage, sentiment, and share of voice; prepare regular reports on PR performance and ROI.

  • Collaborate with the Head of Marketing and cross-functional teams (product, clinical, design, executive) to identify newsworthy developments and ensure messaging consistency.

  • Oversee any external PR consultants or agencies, ensuring deliverables meet our brand standards.

  • Develop and maintain a company news calendar, mapping out key dates, product launches, conferences, and speaking opportunities.

  • Advise on crisis communications and reputation management when necessary.

  • Stay up to date with media trends, competitor activity, and industry developments to inform strategy.

  • Support broader marketing initiatives (e.g., event coordination, social media amplification) to maximize media impact.

  • Pitching our stories to editors, journalists, youtubers, the media. 

  • Undertake ad-hoc PR projects and special media campaigns as required.

  • Manage and create a team of freelancer videographers and photographers in each region to capture amazing user moments.

Person Scorecard

Essential:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in PR or communications, preferably within tech, healthcare, or consumer-tech startups.

  • Proven track record securing coverage in UK and/or US media outlets (print, online, broadcast).

  • Native-level English; exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong relationships or demonstrable network within relevant UK/US press, including tech, health, and lifestyle titles.

  • Highly results-oriented with the ability to pitch at least 50 tailored emails per week, follow up diligently, and adjust tactics based on performance metrics.

  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills: able to juggle multiple campaigns and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency in media monitoring tools (e.g., Cision, Meltwater) and familiarity with PR databases (e.g., Muck Rack).

  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, with a hands-on, “roll up your sleeves” approach.

Desirable:

  • Experience in the medical devices or health sectors.

  • Background working in a startup or high-growth scale-up environment.

  • Exposure to US media landscape and an understanding of regional differences in press engagement.

  • Basic design sense or familiarity with creating/approving visual assets (e.g., infographics).

  • Experience managing or coordinating external PR agencies or freelance specialists.

  • Knowledge of social media amplification techniques to boost earned coverage.
