Job Overview
The Communications Assistant is a vital part of the Marketing and Development team. This role supports donor communication, internal communication, and content strategy while also managing creative media, graphic design, and photography needs. The ideal candidate will be innovative, organized, and detail-oriented, with strong writing, creative, and design skills.
Responsibilities ii
- Content Creation & Curation:
- Write and curate engaging content that aligns with DIU’s mission, values, and branding.
- Write thank you notes and newsletters to donors.
- Develop content for prospective student communications, including emails.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to highlight stories and achievements.
- Contribute to the writing, editing, and creative production of the annual President’s Report (a development magazine).
- Content Strategy & Planning:
- Assist in designing and implementing a comprehensive content strategy that supports marketing and development goals.
- Manage a content calendar to ensure timely, relevant communication.
- Internal Communication:
- Create, design, and disseminate internal content to strengthen campus community awareness.
- Develop content, slides, and animations for DIU announcement TVs across campus.
- Collaboration & Team Support:
- Work with the Director of Development and Marketing and other team members to align projects with institutional goals.
- Provide support on cross-departmental initiatives that require marketing or donor communication.
Activities
- Write, edit, and produce content including news posts, social media updates, newsletters, donor communications, prospective student emails, and development materials.
- Solicit, collect, and edit material from DIU community members for promotional use.
- Suggest and edit website content for SEO best practices.
- Participate in professional development on higher education marketing practices.
- Take photos at events, conduct photo shoots for marketing purposes, and manage photo assets on DIU’s cloud storage, including historical photos.
- Assist with graphic design projects for digital and print media.
- Other duties as assigned.
Communication
- Meet regularly with the Marketing and Development team as directed by the supervisor.
- Use project management tools, Outlook, and Teams for collaboration.
- Maintain professional correspondence with content providers including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Graphic Design, or related field preferred.
- 1+ years of content management, writing, marketing, or design experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with digital tools, design platforms (such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar), and content management systems.
- Photography and photo editing experience preferred.
- Alignment with DIU’s mission and ability to communicate it effectively.
Hours
20 hours per week (paid hourly). Hours to be determined in communication with supervisor. Compensation time is allowed especially during an event season.
Physical Requirements
Good physical health is required. The position requires physical effort such as lifting chairs, moving tables, transporting books and food, etc. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
