Creative Commons (CC) is seeking a seasoned and strategic
Communications Manager to help elevate the organization’s global
visibility, drive impactful storytelling, and support fundraising and
community-building efforts. Reporting to the Director of Strategic
Communications, this key role is responsible for overseeing high-impact
content strategy and execution across channels, managing key messaging
efforts, supporting fundraising communications, and contributing to
organizational thought leadership. The ideal candidate is a
collaborative and proactive communicator with a strong track record in
nonprofit or mission-driven communications.
We are a small team that values collaboration, creativity, and
impact. As such, we’re looking for a versatile Communications Manager
who can think big and roll up their sleeves to execute the work with
care and creativity . This is an exciting time to join the CC team as we
develop new tools for sharing in the age of AI, and as we look toward
celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2026.
Responsibilities
Content Development & Strategy
- Draft, edit, and publish engaging content across CC’s website, blog, newsletters, and social media channels.
- Act as an embedded communication lead for initiatives across the organization shaping and delivering high-impact messaging.
- Lead on the creation of CC branded resources that are designed to meet strategic goals and build global capacity.
- Track metrics and insights, revising communication strategies in real time to meet goals and objectives.
Brand & Messaging
- Champion brand guidelines and ensure their implementation across all communications.
- Oversee, and continuously develop and refine, the CC brand expression via all communications channels and products.
- Lead
the development, and nurture CC’s visual vocabulary and storytelling,
in ways that highlight the multitudes and creativity of the commons.
- Ensure all public-facing content is brand and message-aligned.
Community Engagement & Campaigns
- Create compelling narratives delivered through website text,
social media content, and presentations, including slide decks, that
tell the story of CC, its work, and its impact in ways that resonate
with a diverse audience.
- Own the CC website(s) as communication and fundraising vehicles, in partnership and collaboration with the development team.
- Support event planning, promotion, live coverage, and recaps across the organization.
- Plan and lead major communications campaigns, including product and initiative launches, advocacy pushes, and global events.
- Use
social media to strengthen the CC global community and to create a
strong and meaningful relationship between CC and its supporters.
Fundraising & Donor Communications
- Partner with the fundraising team to develop and execute
communications that inspire donor engagement and support fundraising
campaigns.
- Write and produce donor-focused content, including impact stories, and campaign narratives.
- Collaborate on development collateral that communicates organizational impact and value.
- Ensure
integration of fundraising language and asks on key social media
platforms, the blog, CC website, and event registration pages and
follow-up emails
Skills & Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in strategic communications, preferably within a nonprofit, advocacy, or mission-driven organization.
- Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with a keen eye for detail
- Demonstrated experience crafting content for diverse global audiences, including donors and press.
- Passion for open access, knowledge equity, and the open movement is highly valued.
- Self-starter who thrives in a small, collaborative team and can juggle strategy and execution comfortably.
- Comfortable
working in an environment that is rapidly changing as new tools and
technology develops; not afraid of the ‘blank page’ and ready to jump
in, even when we don’t know all of the answers.
- A deep
understanding of today’s social media landscape and a proven track
record of growing community engagement via social media.
- A keen eye for design. Design skills (e.g. experience with Canva) are highly desirable.
- Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and teams across different areas of subject matter expertise
- Ability and enthusiasm for working in a fully remote and independent environment

Work Environment & Location
Creative Commons is made up of a group of people passionate about
open access. We have been a fully-distributed organization since 2015—
we have no central office. This position is in a remote working
environment. You must be located in the United States or Canada. We
require our team to be available for collaboration, meetings, and calls
between 15:00-19:00 UTC (that’s 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Eastern, 9:00 AM -
1:00 PM Mountain, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Central, and 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Pacific). You must have reasonable mobility for necessary global travel
and high-speed broadband access. A laptop and peripherals are supplied.
Salary & Benefits
Creative Commons is a leading non-profit employer, offering
competitive salaries and benefits, including health and wellness plans,
annual retirement contributions, and a positive, supportive work
environment. The base salary range for this position is $80,000-100,000
USD, commensurate with relevant skills and experience.
